Instead of searching for something to do that will satisfy me (a good goal, but so far one that hasn't delivered any gold), here's a list of things I do that do not satisfy me:
(Some of these satisfy me briefly - as in, while I'm doing them, I'm not dissatisfied. But it's shallow, like channel-surfing, not enriching.)
- Eating the same thing all the time
- Staying up late and wishing I hadn't
- Spending time at work reloading pages on the internet
- Spending hours every evening waiting for someone to speak on IRC
- Spending hours reading my friends page and blogs elsewhere
- Reading hundreds of blog posts every day
- Starting programming tutorials and not getting farther than the first few chapters
- Beating myself up for not being a better ___
- Thinking about how I have not fulfilled my potential
- Living in an untidy room
- Wearing the same clothes/styles of clothes all of the time
- Wearing uncomfortable shoes
- Looking weary and plain
- Doing the same thing at work every day
- Doing work with no challenge, that no longer requires thought
Some things that do satisfy me:
- Actively talking with people online and off
- Taking photographs and looking at the results
- Writing (while I'm doing it)
- Engaged reading
- Walking through parts of the city I'm not familiar with
- Going to parts of it I'm fond of
- Watching seagulls wash in the liffey
- Trying new things
- Showing someone something I've accomplished
- Finding the root of a problem or unpleasant thought
- Doing anything well and fluently
- Explaining something and discovering that I know what I'm talking about
- Doing exams when I'm reasonably familiar with the material
- Finding information for myself or someone else
- Being absorbed in a narrative - a dream, a book, a daydream, a game
