[personal profile] marina linked this, a slow and beautiful guitar-accompanied cover of Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl by Ivri Lider. I've absolutely no liking for the original or its singer. This cover redeems it, turning that exploitative, trashy song into something poignant, gentle, real.

I love how much the meaning of this song changes just by having a man sing it. Wow. This version sounds lovely, too.

It's been recast into another genre of music that I'm not a huge fan of, but it's still a well done cover.

(It's long been my dream to rewrite just about every form of popular music into mid-1960s era jangle pop...)

I love most of his songs - he's one of Israel's biggest rock stars for a reason - but sadly they're all in Hebrew. He has a few songs in English but he has an accent that's more pronounced than in the Katy Perry cover. I'm just saying, because I know it bothers a lot of people.

Jesse is a song he recorded in English, though I think it's sort of... simplistic and more generic than his stuff in Hebrew (which is not surprising for a crossover attempt I suppose). Another cover he did, in English, is The Man I Love for the movie The Bubble, which is where the clips are from.

One of his recent hits in Israel was Nissim which I'm linking because that performance just OOZES sex, to me, although IDK if that comes across without the lyrics. It's a song about violence and war and getting addicted to that feeling power and fighting while also recoiling from it, and it's just so intense in that video.

Also, probably one of his most famous songs is "Bo", which is actually also a cover of a song originally sung by a female singer, but few people remember that now :) Link. It's in Hebrew, but there's a (very rough) translation of the lyircs. The clips are (badly edited lol) from the movie Yossi & Jagger, which is the movie he originally recorded the song for, about two soldiers having an affair in a northern outpost in Israel. The movie and the song became kind of... hugely iconic, around here.

Wow, that cover is beautiful. I actually liked the original song, too, but I'm always a fan of covers because the tone can change so much. It's almost lamenting in this version. Definitely saving this and putting it in my favorites. Thanks for sharing!
